For over fifty-five years Joan has written poetry, song parodies, and served as publicity person in social clubs, schools, and church. She has published dozens of articles in local newspapers for public schools and Daughters of the American Revolution, and in the national Maronite magazines.
After twenty-two years of volunteering in private schools, she became a certified paraprofessional in special education in public elementary schools. She served sixteen years there and also worked with mainstream students in storytelling, creative writing, and poetry presentation classes as Artist in Residence. She maintained her own classroom for addressing behavioral needs, small group classes, and grant writing for school spirit activities. Her volunteer experiences include facilitating personal writing classes in churches, homes, and even a women’s prison.
As mother of four grown daughters and eight grandchildren, Joan says;
"I write to express myself.
I write because I can.
I write because I can no longer dance – as I once did. I write to dance.
I write because I can no longer sing – as I once did. I write to sing.
I write because I no longer look like I once did. I write to be beautiful.
I write to make myself real.
I write for the person I used to be.
I write for the person I am.
I write for the person I will become."
